Bill Bidwill's legacy will remain high profile at his former high school, after Georgetown Prep announced plans to build the William V. Bidwill '49 Stadium this week,

Bidwill, who graduated from Georgetown Prep in 1949 and played football at the school, passed away in 2019.

The Bidwill family then made an "extraordinarily generous gift," the school wrote in a press release, to help create the new stadium.

"Georgetown Prep was such a prominent part of our Dad's life and truly shaped the person that he became," current Cardinals owner and 1983 Georgetown Prep graduate Michael Bidwill said in a statement. "As a family we felt that this project can serve as a lasting way to honor his life as well as the important role that Prep – and athletics in particular – plays in developing the next generation of leaders."

Two of Bill Bidwill's other sons – Patrick, class of 1985, and Tim, class of 1990 – also graduated from Georgetown Prep. The school, located in North Bethesda, Maryland, was founded in 1789.

The stadium will be part of an overall facilities upgrade throughout the campus. It will house football, lacrosse and soccer at the all-boys school.

Bill Bidwill was a two-sport athlete in high school, starting as a fullback and kicker during Georgetown Prep's undefeated 1948 season. He also played for the baseball team.

"This is an extraordinary gift to the School in memory of a man who loved and supported his alma mater," Georgetown Prep's president, Rev. James Van Dyke, said in a statement. "Since the beginning of my time as president, the Bidwill family has been extremely supportive, in particular Michael with his service on the Board of Trustees and co-chair of our capital campaign.

"I had the pleasure of meeting Bill on a number of occasions and we are forever blessed to have his name represented with Prep."
