With the 16th pick of the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, the Cardinals selected Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins.

Collins was National Defensive Player of the Year, winning both the Nagurski and Bednarik awards in 2020. At 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, he could play inside eventually alongside Isaiah Simmons, or he could play outside in the linebacker spot that was held in 2020 by the now-departed Haason Reddick.

He had 11.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, four interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), two pass breakups and a blocked kick in eight games for Tulsa this past season.

The top prospects that seemed to fit the Cards the best were all gone by pick 10: wide receiver Jaylen Waddle sixth to the Dolphins, cornerback Jaycee Horn eighth to the Panthers, Patrick Surtain II ninth to the Broncos, and wide receiver DeVonta Smith 10th to the Eagles, who traded up with the Cowboys.

Early in the draft, the 49ers became the latest NFC West team to add a mobile quarterback by drafting North Dakota State's Trey Lance, a raw talent who may guarantee that the Cards will face Jimmy Garappolo for another season.
