Trevathan became the first Kentucky linebacker to be named All-America, an honor he earned in each of his final two seasons. As a junior in 2010, he recorded 144 tackles, 16.0 tackles-for-loss and 3.0 sacks. He was then chosen National Linebacker of the Year by the College Football Performance Awards as a senior in 2011 after compiling 143 tackles, 11.5 tackles-for-loss, 3.0 sacks, four interceptions, five pass breakups and five forced fumbles.

He also led the SEC in tackles as a junior and senior, earning first-team all-conference honors both seasons.

Trevathan was selected by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 2012 draft and spent his first four NFL seasons in Denver. He helped the Broncos reach two Super Bowls, losing to the Seahawks in 2013 and beating the Panthers in 2015.

Trevathan signed with the Bears in 2016 and has appeared in 46 games with 45 starts over four seasons in Chicago, registering 327 tackles, 6.0 sacks, three interceptions, 15 tackles-for-loss, 16 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Trevathan was named a Pro Bowl alternate in 2018 when he helped the Bears win the NFC North title with a 12-4 record. Starting all 16 games, he compiled 102 tackles, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions and a career-high 8.0 tackles-for-loss.

Last year, Trevathan was leading the Bears with 70 tackles when he sustained a season-ending elbow injury in a Week 10 win over the Lions at Soldier Field.

On March 13, he signed a three-year contract extension with the Bears through 2022.
