THE SKINNY:
The Colts had perhaps the best tight end group in the NFL in 2018, and it might be even better heading into the 2019 season.
There are two Pro Bowlers at the top in Jack Doyle, who last year battled through an injury-plagued season, and Eric Ebron, who exploded for a career year his first season with the Colts, finishing with 66 receptions for 750 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns, while also adding a rushing touchdown. Ebron’s 13 receiving touchdowns set a Colts single-season record for a tight end, and he led all NFL tight ends in receiving touchdowns in 2018 and tied for the second-most among all players; his 14 total touchdowns tied for fifth in the NFL.
But perhaps the real intrigue at the tight end position for the Colts is the potential behind Doyle and Ebron. Ross Travis is a slick, athletic playmaker who is looking to bounce back after sitting out the entire 2018 season with a knee injury, while big Mo Alie-Cox is expected to make a major leap in 2019 after getting his feet wet last season with his first two career touchdown receptions, only about a year-and-a-half removed from being signed by the team after having not played organized football since middle school.
Others fighting for roster spots at the position heading into camp include Billy Brown, Hale Hentges and Gabe Holmes.
