Here are three observations from Monday’s session:
1. Unhappy campers
The Vikings defense protested a couple of calls in drills and the lack thereof in the game situation period at the end of the day.
Mike Zimmer told reporters after the session that he disagreed with one of the calls, but the most animated protest came from Xavier Rhodes and Anthony Barr near the end of the day.
Zimmer created a situation where the offense had a second-and-10 from the opposing 11 with 12 seconds remaining in the first half.
Everson Griffen appeared to have a path to Kirk Cousins, but the Vikings set up a screen to Dalvin Cook, who zoomed to the front left of the end zone and jumped across the goal line. Rhodes wanted a hold on the play and ran over to the official to lobby for the call.
2. Yes, bull
Defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson had a couple of impressive plays in 1-on-1s and helped significantly disrupt the pocket during a team period.
Johnson was able to use his strength on a bull rush, then follow with the finesse of a well-executed spin move during consecutive reps against center Garrett Bradbury.
Johnson, defensive tackle Hercules Mata’afa and Danielle Hunter combined on a rush later in 11-on-11.
Johnson and Mata’afa worked with the first unit. Jalyn Holmes returned to action on the interior of the defensive line after missing Sunday.
3. What a grab
It wasn’t by design, but Ameer Abdullah showed some impressive hands and concentration on a play during 7-on-7.
The running back secured the football behind his back before tucking it.
