Brock Osweiler, a key piece of Broncos' Super Bowl 50 team, announces his retirement

Brock Osweiler, a key piece during the Broncos’ run to Super Bowl 50, has announced his retirement, according to a 9NEWS report.


One of the Broncos' second-round draft picks in 2012, Osweiler had two stints with the team for a combined five seasons.


During that first stint, from 2012-15, Osweiler largely served as the team’s reserve quarterback behind Peyton Manning. In 2015, though, Osweiler was pressed into duty for eight games as Manning dealt with an injury.


Osweiler won five of his seven starts, including a come-from-behind, overtime win over the New England Patriots that would later help clinch homefield advantage for the Broncos throughout the playoffs. The Broncos, with Manning back under center, defeated the Patriots at home in the AFC Championship to advance to the Super Bowl.


Osweiler completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns and six interceptions during his eight games that season.


After spending a season in Houston in 2016, Osweiler returned to Denver in 2017. He served again as a backup quarterback until midway through the season, when he started four games for the team. He also replaced an injured Trevor Siemian early in a game against the Colts and rallied the Broncos from a double-digit deficit.


The former Arizona State quarterback played seven total seasons in the NFL, with his last game action coming in 2018 with the Miami Dolphins.
