ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles earned special recognition for his impressive 2020 season from the Associated Press on Friday, as he was selected to the All-Pro second team.
Bolles placed second at his position in the voting behind only Green Bay's David Bakhtiari.
In his fourth NFL season, Bolles emerged as a reliable and arguably dominant player at left tackle. His previous three seasons had been marked by struggles with penalties amid promising play, but he put those problems behind him in 2020.
According to Pro Football Focus, Bolles did not allow a single sack all season, and among tackles who played at least 800 snaps, no one recorded a better pass-blocking grade. And after three straight seasons with at least 10 penalties accepted against him each year, only four were enforced against him in 2020.
In November, Bolles and the Broncos agreed to a four-year contract extension to keep him in Denver.
And though he did not receive a Pro Bowl selection, perhaps this honor foreshadows one in his future. A year ago, safety Justin Simmons also missed out on the Pro Bowl but was named a second-team All-Pro. After a successful follow-up effort in 2020, Simmons was picked to the Pro Bowl.
However, Simmons missed out on an All-Pro nod this year, as he came in sixth in voting among safeties, just missing the cut behind first-teamers Tyrann Mathieu, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Budda Baker, as well as second-teamers Jamal Adams and Jessie Bates III.
Simmons' absence on the All-Pro teams was the most notable among Broncos players, as his statistics compare favorably to the players who were picked. His five interceptions were only bested by Mathieu; his nine pass breakups were tied for third in the group; and only Baker and Adams had more tackles for loss.
