CHARLOTTE — The Panthers on Monday waived linebacker Andre Smith.
A 2018 seventh-round pick out of North Carolina, Smith appeared in all 16 games last season. He was a heavy special teams contributor as a second-year pro, playing 66 percent of snaps on the unit. Smith also had 25 snaps on defense in 2019, making five tackles.
Carolina has made several transactions at linebacker over the last few weeks, cutting Smith, David Reese, Jason Ferris, and Kyahva Tezino. The club brought in veteran linebacker Julian Stanford last week.
The Panthers still have eight linebackers on their roster, with Shaq Thompson and Tahir Whitehead leading the room.
By cutting Smith, Carolina's roster stands at 79 players. Rosters must be reduced to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.
