Primary goals
Reich on Friday told Colts.com he has a couple goals in mind for the offense heading into today's second preseason game, especially when it comes to the rushing attack, which accounted for a combined one rushing yard in six attempts when the first-team offense was on the field last week.
"Yeah, it’d be really good with our first unit to have some success, make some first downs, get the ball in the end zone — we’d really like to see that," Reich said. "And obviously we need to run the ball a little bit better than we did in that first game. And so we’ll get it dialed in there, and that’ll certainly be one objective of this game."
Defensively, Reich wants to see more consistent pressure out of the big fellas up front. The Colts had three sacks last week against the Bills — two by Carroll Phillips and one by Al-Quadin Muhammad — but couldn't get much going with their pass rush early.
"I think the next step is to continue to get pressure on the passer," Reich said. "We’re always kind of in the same mode — ‘Hey, stop the run, force them in the pass situations, and then get pressure on the passer.’ And then at all times, whether run or pass, we’re forcing turnovers; this mindset of forcing turnovers. And then, really, the other thing we’re just continuing to establish — we saw it in Buffalo some, but we just want to continue to see it — is just the fast pace of how we play defense, of finishing to the ball, running to the ball, hustle, hustle hustle; this is another good chance to establish that."
