ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos have signed veteran quarterback Blake Bortles to their practice squad, the team announced Monday.

Bortles, the third-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, signed with Denver in late September after Drew Lock suffered an injury against the Steelers in Week 2.

He did not appear in the Broncos' two ensuing games — against Tampa Bay in Week 3 and the New York Jets in Week 4 — and the Broncos released him on Saturday ahead of their Week 6 game in New England.

But Bortles, who spent the first five years of his career in Jacksonville and led the Jaguars to an AFC Championship appearance in 2017, will remain in Denver as a member of the practice squad.

Under a new NFL rule, teams may have a limited number of veterans with unlimited experience on their practice squad.

The Broncos currently have three quarterbacks on their active roster: Lock, Brett Rypien and Jeff Driskel.
