CHARLOTTE — The Panthers have added depth at defensive end, as the club was assigned former Cowboy Jalen Jelks via waivers on Monday.
Dallas selected Jelks in the seventh round of the 2019 draft out of Oregon. He spent his rookie season on injured reserve, as the Cowboys placed him on the list during roster cuts at the end of August. Jelks was competing for a role on the rotation this summer, but the Cowboys waived him on Sunday when they signed defensive end Everson Griffen.
Jelks was a first-team All-Pac-12 honoree as a senior at Oregon, leading the conference's defensive linemen with 57 tackles. He recorded 7.5 tackles for loss and had 3.5 sacks. In all, Jelks tallied 29.5 tackles for loss and 15.0 sacks in his collegiate career.
Though Carolina's roster stands at 80 players, the Panthers will not have to make a corresponding roster move until Jelks clears all COVID-19 testing protocols.
