The Cardinals hold the No. 1 overall pick for April’s NFL draft for the first time since 1958. As the day for the Cards to make their selection draws closer, azcardinals.com will take a look at the last 30 No. 1 overall selections and each player’s impact on the team and league.


NAME/YEAR: T Eric Fisher, 2013


TEAM: Kansas City Chiefs


THE SITUATION: Fisher was anything but a sure thing, but this draft didn’t have a quarterback worth taking high. The Chiefs fixed their QB issue by acquiring former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith, so they set their sights on an offensive lineman. Fisher, from Central Michigan, was hopefully going to be Kansas City’s long-term answer at left tackle.


THE CAREER: While Fisher hasn’t been an Orlando Pace, he has started nearly every game since his rookie season and was a fixture for an offensive line leading the way for the most dangerous and highest-scoring offense in the league in 2018.


THE OTHER OPTIONS IN TOP FIVE: In a draft that history has not treated well, there were no other obvious choices, especially since Fisher has become steady in Kansas City. Tackle Lane Johnson (fourth, Eagles) has carved out a similar turn in Philadelphia, and defensive end Ziggy Ansah (fifth, Lions) has been OK for Detroit when he is able to stay healthy.
